Two taxes affect the money you deposit and receive from betting:
- 5% deposit excise duty: Charged on money deposited for betting purposes. If your operator deducts the duty from a KES 1,000 deposit, KES 50 goes to tax and KES 950 becomes available in your wallet.
- 5% payout withholding tax: Charged on the gross taxable payment made to your account. For a KES 2,000 payout, KES 100 goes to tax and you receive KES 1,900.
Under the 2026 changes, the withholding tax point includes money paid or disbursed to a player’s account—not only money transferred to M-Pesa or a bank. Read the Finance Act 2026 analysis.
Using the calculator
Enter your deposit and gross payout before tax deductions. Choose whether your operator deducts deposit duty or charges it on top. Enter zero in either field to calculate only the other transaction.
Deposit and payout taxes apply to different amounts, so they should not simply be added together as a flat 10% tax.
